9:30 am until we finish; bring a vegetarian lunch for yourself if you wish, and maybe a little to share
Have you wondered why we call organized prayer, “services”? We gather together in sacred space to “serve,” to do sacred work with and for each other.
The Shabbat morning “service” is not a random collection of prayers. It is a journey taking us both out of ourselves and into ourselves. Through prayer, chant, song, movement, and meditation, we will travel the path of the Jewish mystics to the sacred heart of Shabbat and Shavuot.
For this special Shabbat, on the second morning of Shavuot, we will celebrate the revelation at Sinai by bringing our own revelations. When Moshe came down from the mountain with two tablets, he saw the people dancing around the golden calf and realized that they were not ready for the message on the tablets. He returned to the mountaintop, where he received two more tablets, the message on which we have still not lived up to. But what was on the two tablets that Moshe destroyed? We will share our visions of the ultimate reality behind the tablets.
Tradition is to stay up all night on Shavuot, studying and sharing. We won’t be all night – and we won’t be all day – but we will take the time needed for everyone to share their inner spark.
