Led by Cantor Beth Cohen and Rabbi Min Kantrowitz
Erev Shavuot, the evening of the beginning of Shavuot, is usually marked with services and Torah study in anticipation of the receiving of the Torah, which tradition says we received on that holiday. At Nahalat Shalom, we will start with Havdalah, which not only concludes Shabbat, but also ends the period of counting of the Omer. This will be followed by a short Ma'ariv (Evening) Service. There will be some teaching and text study, part of which will focus on the way Jewish teachings and legal decisions have changed throughout time. Near the end of the evening, we will participate in a ritual of receiving the Torah by taking out the Torah scrolls and literally passing them around to all participants, so that each of us receives the Torah. Song, music and chanting will weave throughout the evening.
