SONG SHEET AND PRAYERS

Please join us as we celebrate Shabbat in the Sephardic tradition. Sofie Shefia will lead us in song and prayer, joined by a founding organizer Hershel Weiss. The evening includes an opportunity for everyone to share from their heart. All are welcome!

Last month, in what we believe was the first public reading of the poetry of nineteenth century Sephardic-American poet Emma Lazarus in Spanish, writer, researcher, teacher and translator Héctor Contreras López shared his translation from English of her poem “In the Jewish Synagogue at Newport”. Everyone noted how moved they felt by hearing Emma’s words returned to her ancestral language. “Reading these poems in Spanish brings them back home,” says Héctor. He has spent years meticulously and lovingly translating some of Emma Lazarus’s poetry and as far as we know, this is the first time her poems have been translated into the Spanish language.

Join us this Friday for the second poem in our series, “By the Waters of Babylon, Little Poems In Prose” (A fragment).
