EMMA LAZARUS: POET AND ACTIVIST. Most people who have heard of Emma Lazarus know her as the author of the sonnet inscribed on a plaque on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. What is less known is that Emma Lazarus was Sephardic and much of her poetry, prose and translations express the Sephardic experience.
Starting in September, during our monthly Sephardic Shabbat gatherings, we will be sharing a special project that began three years ago. Héctor Contreras López is a writer, researcher, teacher and translator, who has done extensive research on Jewish-Mexican literature. He became interested in the poetry of Emma Lazarus and came up with the idea of translating her poetry into Spanish, as a way of studying it and to make it available to Spanish speaking Jews in the United States. At our next gathering,Hector will present the poem In the Jewish Synagogue at Newport, the first in a series of Emma's poems he translated into Spanish. The bilingual readings will include the original English versions.
