Zoom: Dance of the Hebrew Letters with Bruce Bierman

The angular and oppositional shapes and deeper meanings under the Hebrew letters have stretched the body, heart and imagination for millennium. 13th century Spanish Kabbalist, Abraham Abulafia, developed a whole meditation system focusing on each letter. Choreographers Anna Berg and her husband, Felix Fibich, also discovered the power of these letters when using them to choreograph the 1937 classic Yiddish film, ‘The Dybbuk’. In this 75 min. workshop, we will step into the ‘character’ of KUF—the letter, according to Kabbalah, associated with this month of Adar. Through invigorating movement prompts, guided questions and a gorgeous musical soundtrack ---we will be ‘midrashing’ on our feet and discovering for ourselves, and with the group---the secrets behind the letter often associated with Purim and laughter-- KUF.

Bruce Bierman studied for a brief time with Felix Fibich one on one. Mr. Fibich passionately shared his ideas, choreography, costumes, photos and memories of a life upon the Yiddish stage along with his deep passion for the Hebrew letters and his desire to pass it along to others. This workshop is dedicated to his memory.

Zoom: Playing Kiselgof: Exploring New Repertoire from the Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Corpus with Christina Crowder

Special feature workshop with Christina Crowder, accordionist & Executive Director of the Klezmer Institute

A chance encounter in Tokyo a few years ago led to the unlikely release of thousands of unique musical manuscripts in a Kyiv archive previously unavailable to contemporary klezmer musicians and scholars. The Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project is an international digital humanities project connecting participants with the work of important klezmer musicians from late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. With the release of the Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project (KMDMP) materials we have about five times more easily available eastern European klezmer music in score/manuscript form than previously available. And over the first year volunteers have digitally notated more than 760 melodies! This class will be a chance to jump into this tremendously fun new tune pool and swim around a bit. We’ll learn a few terrific tunes, and compare the charts we’re working from with the manuscript originals.

Zoom: The Music is the Story Storytelling Workshop with Maggidah Batya Podos

We are so often dancing, or tapping our toes, or letting ourselves be swept away by the melodies of Klezmer, that we don’t pay attention to the words of the songs. In this workshop, we’ll look at the English translations of Klezmer songs and turn them into story, learning some storytelling techniques along the way. Come and play.

Zoom: Moving Yiddish Poetry with Bruce Bierman

A choreopoem is a form of dramatic expression that weaves text, dance, movement, music and song all together in one seamless flow. This 75 minute workshop will share all the fun tools needed to create a fully-embodied choreopoem highlighting the art of celebrated 20th century Yiddish poet, Celia Dropkin. Creating in pairs, individually and as an ensemble, participants will discover the immediate relevancy of Dropkin's passionate poems and how engaging it is to breath life into them with full voice, body and soul!

Bruce Bierman choreographed the poems of Itzik Manger for the Berkeley Jewish Music Festival's celebrated production of 'The Megilleh of Itzik Manger' . He is currently developing a movement theater piece based on the poetry of Irene Klepfisz with Naomi Newman---founding member of A Traveling Jewish Theater.
